The Mentoring for Youth and Young Adults from Care (MYYAC) Program increases access to mentoring for youth (16-17) and young adults (18-24) transitioning out of care from Alberta Children's Services as they move toward independence. Eligible youth and young adults are provided with 1-to-1 and group-based mentorship opportunities as they work towards achieving self-identified goals.
- Location: Red Deer
- When: Any Time
As of December 2021, there were 7,985 children and youth in care in Alberta – more than 70% of these children and youth are Indigenous. Mentorship is a demonstrated transformational opportunity to support young adults transitioning from care to develop skills and positive relationships that enhance their quality of life and long-term well-being.
The Mentoring for Youth and Young Adults from Care (MYYAC) Program is a response to the need for an expansion of mentoring opportunities. The program intends to:
- Increase access to mentoring for youth and young adults
- Recruit and train mentors
- Provide culturally appropriate and specialized training and resources to mentors, mentees, and community partners
- Offer direct service delivery of mentoring supports
Eligible youth and young adults transitioning out of care can be referred via the Transition to Adulthood Program (TAP), a Child Intervention Practitioner, or by self-referral.
