A series of Halloween weekend events helped raise big bucks for the Boys & Girls Club of Red Deer and District. The Zed Fright Night Film Series as well as the Zed Halloween Howl Poker Run raised a combined $20,000 to support programming throughout central Alberta.

The poker run saw participants from around central Alberta join in the fun, starting and ending at Westerner Park, for the opportunity to win a variety of prizes. Participants visited various checkpoints around the city, including the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, Sobeys Gaetz South, Dairy Queen, Parkland Mall, and Troubled Monk Brewery.

“This was our first Red Deer-based poker run, and we’re pleased with the turnout,” said John Johnston, Community Engagement Manager for Youth HQ. “All our participants had a great time, and the feedback has been really positive.”

The film series, which showcased The Addams Family and Hocus Pocus on Friday, October 30, and Ghostbusters and Casper on Halloween evening, brought in close to 75 cars over the two-evening run.

“Trying to find new and innovative ways to fundraise while engaging the public can be a challenge, especially during present circumstances,” said Rob Lewis, Executive Director for Youth HQ. “We’ve never done a drive-in movie night fundraiser before, and as always we’re grateful for the community’s support.”

Both events were supported by a team of over 70 volunteers. The film series and poker run acted as replacement fundraisers for Red Deer’s Most Fatal Attraction, the Zed Haunted House, which has supported Boys & Girls Club of Red Deer and District for over 25 years.
